Court Backlogs and Leniency

NPA Policy Commitments

  • Prioritize judicial appointments and expand court capacity
  • Ensure sustainable funding to prevent case dismissals
  • Modernize digital justice infrastructure
  • Strengthen prosecution capacity for complex criminal matters

The Alberta Non-Partisan Association (NPA) supports addressing court backlogs and ensuring an effective justice system. Albertans deserve timely access to justice, and serious criminal cases must not be dismissed due to systemic delays.

Our Four-Pillar Approach

Policy Pillar Commitment
Judicial Resources Immediate fulfillment of judicial appointments and expansion of court capacity
System Funding Adequate, sustainable, and predictable justice system funding
Legal Infrastructure Digital justice projects and modernized registry systems
Community Safety Enhanced prosecution personnel and capacity for complex matters

Prioritize Judicial Resources

The NPA advocates for the immediate fulfillment of judicial appointments and the expansion of court capacity. Every Albertan has a constitutional right to a trial within a reasonable time. Unfilled judicial positions create bottlenecks that delay justice for victims, accused persons, and communities alike.

Targeted System Funding

The NPA supports adequate, sustainable, and predictable funding for the justice system. Without proper resources, serious criminal cases face dismissal due to procedural delays under Jordan applications. This outcome fails victims, undermines public confidence, and allows potentially dangerous individuals to avoid accountability.

Modernize Legal Infrastructure

The NPA champions investments in digital justice projects and modernized registry systems. Streamlining legal processes and reducing administrative friction will help courts process cases more efficiently, freeing judicial resources to focus on substantive matters rather than procedural delays.

Enhance Community Safety

The NPA addresses public concerns regarding leniency by ensuring prosecutors have the personnel and capacity required to handle complex criminal matters effectively and efficiently. Well-resourced prosecution services are essential to holding offenders accountable and maintaining public safety.

The NPA Position

Court backlogs undermine justice for all Albertans. The NPA is committed to a justice system that is timely, well-funded, technologically modern, and adequately staffed to protect our communities and uphold the rule of law.
